Tools and How-To Sites
RSN Stitch Bank
The Royal School of Needlework (RSN) maintains an online stitch bank. You can search for a stitch, and read all the details and intricacies of the stitch e.g. technique of stitch, similiar stitches, structure, variations, common uses etc. There are how-to videos demonstrating the stitch.
EGA - A Little Book of Embroidery Basics
Embroiderers' Guild Of America (EGA) website has a small downlable pdf booklet to encourage and enable a new embroiderer to learn, improve and enhance her/his skills. View their Resources page too for other needlework related information and free projects.
Mary Corbet's Needle 'n Thread How-To Videos
How-to videos for different surface embroidery stitches.
Counted Cross Stitch, Needlework and Stitchery page by Kathleen Dyer
This site contains lots of useful information, including a cross stitch tutorial, a fabric calculator, charts of colour equivalents for various threads, and much more. The original link no longer works, so there are links to FAQ documents that don't seem to be available anymore, but most of the information is still here.
Stitch Palettes for color tools
A very handy site for colors. The "Palette Generator" is a great tool to select threads that go together, or different shades of a thread etc. The "Photo Converter" picks colors from your photos and generates a color palette. You can use it to generate the mood in the photo for another pattern by using the color combinations.
Antique Pattern Library
This site collects and posts scans or pdfs of out of copyright pattern books. There is a wonderful collection of old DMC publications.
